Elena Petkova, Child policies national expert

Elena is one of the first team members of Hope and homes for children – Bulgaria since 2012. She initially started as a regional coordinator for the purpose of closure of the baby home in Ruse. Thanks to her efforts and her partnership with local institutions and social service providers, in 2015 Ruse became the first district in the country without institutions for children.

She is currently supporting the coordinators in Northern Bulgaria and the district of Sliven and with her active participation, all orphanages in Northern Bulgaria have been closed apart from the ones in Pleven and Varna which are about to be closed.

She participates in meetings with local and national institutions and in the development of the legal framework in relation to the new Social Services Act and has been one of the most active advocates for children’s rights for more than 17 years.You can contact Elena Petkova
